Prepare for the fair

Career fairs are a valuable opportunity to meet employers, learn about different industries and explore career paths. Treat them like a live networking event—come prepared to make a strong impression.

  1. Plan ahead (weeks before)

    • Mark the event on your calendar and set reminders
    • Prepare professional attire
    • Update your resume and LinkedIn with a career coach
    • Gather a few day-of essentials such as a hairbrush, mints and deodorant
    • Visit OSU Career Services in 360 SU to print your resume, order business cards and buy a padfolio
    • Download the Career Fair Plus app to view employers and plan your day
  2. Get set (day before)

    • Steam or iron your clothes
    • Use the Career Fair Plus app to find where the employers you're interested in are located
    • Prepare to answer questions about your skills, interests and values
    • Write down your elevator pitch and practice with a friend or mentor
    • Update your profile on the Job & Interview portal for employers to view
  3. Stand out (day of the fair)

    • Double check your appearance in advance and freshen up as needed
    • Arrive early and make the most of networking opportunities
    • Shake hands, make eye contact and smile confidently
    • Practice active listening skills when speaking with employers, using open body language
    • Thank employers for their time and exchange cards, making note of any important hiring deadlines mentioned during the conversation
  4. Keep it going (after)

    • Follow up with employers via email or by connecting on LinkedIn
    • Bookmark company hiring pages and follow their social media accounts
    • Reflect on your experience, noting how you might improve for future fairs
    • Seek out opportunities to connect with the employers you met at future events
    • Monitor your email and voicemail regularly and follow up promptly
