Cover letters that get you noticed

Each cover letter should be a unique one-page document detailing: 

  • A demonstrated interest in the company
  • How your skills and experience are relevant to the position
  • Why you are the best candidate for the job 


Tell your story

First paragraph

  • Begin with a professional greeting
  • Address the reader with decorum (ex. Mr./Ms./Dr. or their title)
  • Name the position and include how you learned about the opening
  • State what you know about the organization and why you are interested in applying
  • If an employee referred you for the role, mention by name that they recommended you apply 

Body paragraphs

  • Using keywords from the job description, describe how you can meet the company’s needs
  • Tailor your letter for each employer, including unique details from your experience that align with the position
  • Avoid repeating your resume-highlight three to four experiences that show your fit for the role

Final paragraph

  • Keep it simple 
  • Include a call to action, such as an interest in interviewing for the position and the best way to contact you
  • Thank the reader for their time and consideration
