Utilize the checklist to ensure your letter is focused, tailored and highlights your best qualifications for the job.


Format the document as a formal letter 

  • Include a header with your name and contact information, consistent with your resume
  • Use the same fonts and sizes as your resume for a consistent look 

 

Personalize your cover letter for each employer

  • Address the letter to a specific person for a personalized feel
  • Research the company’s mission, role in the industry and culture
  • Review the job description, highlighting your qualifications
  • Show your interest and enthusiasm for the position and company 

 

Tell the employer what you can do for them

  • Describe why you are the best candidate for the job
  • Discuss transferrable skills using keywords from the job description
  • List specific examples that demonstrate where you built each skill
  • Write confidently, positively and honestly about your experience
  • Vary sentence structure, minimizing the use of “I” as a starter 

 

Be professional, polite and precise

  • Thank the reader for their time
  • Proofread carefully, editing for spelling and grammar mistakes
  • Focus on the skills you have and your commitment to professional growth
  • Close with a salutation and your signature 
  • Follow up within a week of applying with a phone call or email
